Subject: Alarming Plans for the New Congress
Alarming Plans for the New Congress As a result of last night’s election, a Democrat majority will take control of both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate come January. At the time of this writing, the Democrats will control the Senate 54-44, with races in Mississippi and Alaska too close to call. The Democrat majority in the U.S. House currently stands at 228-139 with 68 races to be called. The expected agenda for the new Congress is alarming. In September, a Democrat Healthcare Working Group in the U.S. House of Representatives identified two extreme bills on abortion for action within the first 100 hours of the new Congress if Democrats were to take control of the House. The Working Group consulted with over 60% of the Democratic caucus. A top priority of the Democrat Working Group is the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), which could more fittingly be characterized as the “National Abortion-on-Demand Act.” This legislation would impose a right to abortion on demand nationwide. It would eliminate state laws banning abortion at any stage of pregnancy, including laws that have been enacted post-Dobbs. Laws requiring parental involvement in a minor’s abortion, prohibiting taxpayer funding of abortion, and laws requiring that only physicians perform abortions would be among those invalidated. Even conscience protection laws would likely be invalidated. A second priority of the Working Group for the first 100 hours is legislation to remove restrictions on federal funding of abortion, including eliminating the Hyde Amendment. The Hyde Amendment has been law for 50 years and is accredited with saving more than 2.6 million lives. The anti-Hyde legislation is called the EACH Act (Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance Act). NCHLA will be enlisting your prayers and action to work to defeat these extreme bills in the new Congress which starts in January. Ballot Measures Pro-life forces suffered defeat on three of the abortion ballot measures. Missouri’s anti-abortion ballot measure was defeated 55.5%-44.5%, with opponents of the measure receiving $26 million compared to around $6.7 million received by the pro-life side. The people of Nevada voted in favor of inserting a right to abortion in the state constitution for a second and final time 63.3%-36.7%. Virginia voters approved “right to reproductive freedom” amendment passed 62.4%-37.6%, with proponents of the measure spending $3.7 million, and the pro-life side spending about $850,000. The pro-life side had a victory in the defeat of the Idaho pro-abortion ballot measure that was designed to overturn Idaho’s current statutory prohibition on abortion. The measure was defeated 55.4%-44.6%. Proponents of the measure raised $5.8 million, and opponents raised nearly $4.7 million. Protecting life in law will become even more challenging soon, but this is not a reason to give up hope nor to stop trying. What is good and true must triumph through those who seek it and we will be resolute in seeking to protect life. Sincerely, Loretta Fleming Executive Director
Susan Muskett Senior Legislative Counsel....
