Some quotes from "The Sexual State: How Elite Ideologies Are Destroying Lives and Why the Church Was Right All Along" (Jennifer Roback Morse PhD, 2018)

Part One: The Sexual State

1The Misery of Modern Life

Dr Morse opens with an intensely powerful quote: The greatest disease in the West today is not TB or leprosy; it is being unwanted, unloved, and uncared for. We can cure physical diseases with medicine, but the only cure for loneliness, despair, and hopelessness is love. There are many in the world who are dying for a piece of bread but there are many more dying for a little love. The poverty in the West is a different kind of poverty—it is not only a poverty of loneliness but also of spirituality. There's a hunger for love, as there is a hunger for God. —Saint Teresa of Calcutta, A Simple Path"

"We have more sex with more people than any society in the history of the world. But we long for intimacy and true friendship. Most of us know there is something deeply wrong with our culture, but we can't quite put our finger on what it is or what to do about it."

2Conflict and Confusion: What Is the Sexual Revolution and How Are People Trying to Deal With It?

"The Sexual Revolution consists of ideas as well as the policies that put those ideas into practice. The three main ideas of the Sexual Revolution are that a good and decent society should:
1.separate sex from childbearing: the Contraceptive Ideology;
2.separate both sex and childbearing from marriage: the Divorce Ideology;
3.eliminate all distinctions between men and women except those that individuals explicitly embrace: the Gender Ideology."

"The Feminist Narrative also approves of many of the changes that result in relationship instability such as the idea that one can leave a relationship at any time for any reason. Their narrative usually includes an allusion to domestic violence. Women are better off being able to leave an abusive marriage without having to give any reasons or evidence. Whether most divorcing couples are abusive, how divorce law actually functioned prior to no-fault divorce, and what secondary problems the no-fault policy might cause are all questions the Feminist Narrative doesn't address."

"The view of sex behind the Liberationist Narrative can be traced back to a German psychiatrist named Wilhelm Reich."

"We're seeing the introduction of...what is called 'intergenerational sex.' What was once called 'pedophilia' and treated as pathological, some people would like to redefine as an orientation all its own, an inborn desire for sex with a younger person. This line of thought minimizes any possible harm to the younger person. It also minimizes the possible harm inherent in relationships with large age differences: power imbalances between the younger and the older, or a tendency toward immaturity on the part of the older person seeking a relationship with a younger person."  ABSOLUTELY HIDEOUS!

  • Natural Family Planning Awareness Week (USCCB, July 21-27, 2019)

  • Tragically, it is the RARE parish where you can easily find any information about Natural Family Planning. How ironic that the below ad is now being seen in the NYC subway!
    If it is NOT used in conjunction with contraceptives, it appears this fertility awareness tool (www.naturalcycles.com/different) could be used morally by husbands and wives.

Male and Female He Created Them
On June 10, 2019, the Vatican Congregation for Catholic Education released a reflection on human sexuality entitled: " 'Male and Female He Created Them': Towards a Path of Dialogue on the Question of Gender Theory in Education"

The document is the fullest exposition of the concept of gender (gender identity, gender fluidity, ‘transgenderism,’ etc.) that has been released from the Vatican to date. It is concerned with the “educational crisis… in the field of affectivity and sexuality” (no. 1) and reiterates Catholic anthropology, rooted in Sacred Scripture and Tradition. “The Christian vision of anthropology sees sexuality as a fundamental component of one’s personhood” (no. 4).

The document seeks to combat the dualism that is operative in the idea that “one’s gender ends up being viewed as more important than being of male or female sex. The effect of this move is chiefly to create a cultural and ideological revolution driven by relativism, and secondarily a juridical revolution, since such beliefs claim specific rights for the individual and across society” (no. 20). This is precisely what legislation such as the Equality Act does.
Made for Love Podcast
Last month's Made for Love explored the family and technology as well as the suffering of miscarriage.

Technology and the Family
Pope Francis has spoken on numerous occasions, such as the World Meeting of Families in Dublin in 2018, about the impact of technology on family life, and the importance of a family’s “unplugging” in order to be together. Today we’ll talk about how families balance technology, especially social media, and their time together. This episode features Bishop Konderla of the Diocese of Tulsa, Dr. Timothy O’Malley of the University of Notre Dame, Mary Warren of CUA, and Tommy Tighe.

Miscarriage
Every child is a gift, and the loss of even the smallest life is mourned by Catholic parents. Today we’re talking about one of the heaviest crosses that is borne in Catholic family life: miscarriage and infant loss. This episode includes Leah Libresco, Laura Fanucci, author, with her husband Franco, of Grieving Together: A Couple’s Journey through Miscarriage, and Msgr. Donald Sakano from the Archdiocese of New York.

In July, Made for Love will look at the temperaments in marriage and family vacations!

Legal/ Policy Updates
Athletes in CT – On June 17th, three high school track athletes in Connecticut brought a Title IX complaint with the Dept. of Education against Connecticut’s policy of allowing male “transgender girls” to compete in girls’ sports. At least one had lost spot in New England Regionals to two men.

Chick-fil-A – On June 10th, Texas passed the “Save Chick-fil-A” bill prohibiting discrimination by a government on account of the religious organization to which a business owner belongs or donates, after the restaurant being banned from San Antonio’s airport.

Surrogacy – Despite passing in the state senate, a bill to allow commercial surrogacy in New York (one of only four states that disallows it) did not make it out of the state assembly after noted feminists came out against usual Democratic allies to oppose the measure.

Ecuador – Ecuador’s high court imposed same-sex marriage in the country on June 12th.

Kansas – On June 21st, Kansas agreed in a lawsuit to allow people to change the sex on their birth certificates. It had been one only three remaining states that did not do so.

California – On June 24th, the California Assembly passed a resolution to admonish pastors to affirm homosexuality and transgenderism; and the next day the legislature advanced a bill to mandate inmates be placed according to “gender identity.”

4 years after the Obergfell decision and 51 years after Humanae Vitae,

the majority of Catholics are ill-equipped to defend marriage in the public square, because the MAJORITY of Catholics do not understand the authentic meaning of marriage!  As reported by the Roper Center, about 80% of Catholics approve of cohabitation, 76% favor a change in the prohibition of contraceptive use, and only about 19% find divorce to be a moral issue.  According to the Pew Research Center, 61% of Catholics support same sex marriage.  They are failing to appreciate that it is the Church's responsibility to communicate God's loving plan for marriage....
