Support a Better Life for Human Trafficking Victims
While the Pa Catholic Conference is supporting SB 554, doesn't the fact that Senator Daylin Leach is one of its prime sponsors suggest that there should be careful assessment of whether this legislation and its implications are truly consistent with Catholic teaching?
After passing both chambers, are we shamefully seeing SB 3 stalemated and HB 77 stalemated?

NCOSE calls for amending the Communication Decency Act (Section 230), to fight online sex trafficking
Kudos to Brian Fitzpatrick is joined by fellow U.S. Representatives from Pennsylvania Brady, Evans, Kelly, Rothus, Shuster, and Smucker as co-sponsors of HR 1865 (Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act of 2017), while Senator Casey (but NOT Senator Toomey) is a co-sponsor of S 1693 (Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act) "'Expeditious passage of H.R. 1865 Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act of 2017 (FOSTA) and S. 1693 Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA) will move the country closer to striking a blow against the online havens that facilitate sex trafficking'" (National Center on Sexual Exploitation, 9/7/17).

- Urge Congress to Enact the Conscience Protection Act of 2017!
As per a 9/20/17 email from Human Life Action: "This is 'appropriations season' on the Hill. That means Congress must pass funding legislation for Fiscal Year 2018.... Last Thursday, the House of Representatives approved HR 3354, Make America Secure and Prosperous Appropriations Act, 2018. It includes the full text of the Conscience Protection Act (CPA) of 2017! It also includes other provisions which we have taken action on such as the nullification of the DC law that legalized assisted suicide and the DC Reproductive Health Non-Discrimination Act (RHNDA), a DC law....There are many other pro-life provisions (both longstanding and new) in the funding bill as well, such as a prohibition on funding elective abortions for detainees of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and against funding for research involving human fetal tissue from abortions....Of the new provisions, our top priority is to ensure that the CPA is included.... rather than finalizing the FY 2018 appropriations legislation by the end of the fiscal year (September 30), both the House and the Senate passed a Continuing Resolution to fund the government at its current levels with current policies until December 8, 2017....I again urge you to continue contacting your members of Congress. It is particularly important that the Senate know that our top priority is inclusion of the Conscience Protection Act in the year-end appropriations legislation."

Dear Pro-Life Leaders,
Please call and email your state Senators and urge them to support House Bill 1139, which strengthens our Newborn Protection Act.
This bill will expand the number of options for women who give birth and who believe they cannot care for their newborn children. To read more about the bill, see the co-sponsorship memo at http://www.legis.state.pa.us//cfdocs/Legis/CSM/showMemoPublic.cfm?chamber=H&SPick=20170&cosponId=23257 .
If you don't know who your state Senator is, or you need contact information, please go to http://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/home/findyourlegislator/#address .
This is a state bill, not a federal one, so you do not need to contact Senators Pat Toomey or Bob Casey.
The bill has already passed the House—a victory in the Senate would bring us much closer to final victory—and help save lives!
Thank you for making these important calls and sending these critical emails.
All the best,
Maria V. Gallagher

"Throwaway Children"
"According to the National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway and Throwaway Children, more than 2,100 children are reported missing every day in America. Add to that the fact that 1 in 6 runaways is likely to become a victim of sex trafficking, and the need to urgently deal with this crisis becomes clear....
[Legislation needs to] "allow victims of sex trafficking to seek justice against websites that knowingly facilitate crimes against them; eliminate federal liability protections for websites that assist, support or facilitate a violation of federal trafficking laws; enable state law-enforcement officials, not just the U.S. Department of Justice, to take action against individuals or businesses that violate federal sex- trafficking laws"

involved in the diagnosis, treatment and recovery of human health....
"To serve life is to serve God in the person: it is to become 'a collaborator with God in restoring health to the sick body'[16] and to give praise and glory to God in the loving welcome to life, especially if it be weak and ill.[17]....

The eyes of Andrea Boceli appear to see so much more than those of James Martin, SJ!
- Though Jesuit Father James Martin's book on the Holy Land (Jesus: A Pilgrimage, 2016) has an Imprimi Potest, it includes (in my opinion) some excessive speculation and some snarky comments: "Then I saw the Jordan River. It was neon green, more like Mountain Dew than water. 'I told you it was gross,' said [fellow Jesuit priest] George" (p.98).
- "Italian star tenor Andrea Bocelli made a pilgrimage to the traditional site of Jesus’ baptism Monday, praying for peace as he stood on the edge of the River Jordan. Bocelli, 58, who is blind, was guided by a priest who scooped up river water and poured it over the singer’s hands. The artist, a Roman Catholic, made a sign of the cross and the priest recited the Ave Maria (Hail Mary) prayer. The spot represents the 'roots of my faith,' Bocelli told The Associated Press. 'For this reason, it is a very special place. I am very happy to be here. I prayed for peace in the world'" (Washington Post, 9/18/17)
Incredible online material about the Holy Land is available from the Franciscans (www.custodia.org).
