  • Buffalo’s Caretaker Bishop: Let Healing Grace Fall Like Snow (National Catholic Register, 12/6/19)
    • Bishop Scharfenberger was ordained in 1973 and began his priestly ministry in the Diocese of Brooklyn:

"In 1968 only 338 annulments were granted in the United States.  Today[i.e., 1997], the U.S. church approves more than 50,000 every year.

"'An annulment is, essentially, a conclusion based upon evidence that (what) would appear to have been a solid and binding marriage was, in fact, not," said Monsignor Edward Scharfenberger, judicial vicar of the Dioceses of New York....

"parents who have an annulment...'will be doing their children a potential service by helping them to see what in fact does constitute a true marriage and what does not,' Scharfenberger said.

"The controversy was brought to the attention of the nation recently by Sheila Rauch Kennedy, who is appealing the annulment of her 12-year marriage to Democrat U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy of Massachusetts" (CNN, 7/6/1997).

    • Fast forward back to our time and long after the Vatican formally agreed that the annulment of the marriage between Sheila Rausch and Joe Kennedy II was invalid, we find Rausch and Kennedy's son, Rep Joe Kennedy III, to be an enemy of religious freedom, a "champion" of redefining marriage/family/sexuality, and an unapologetic promoter of abortion.  Sorry Bishop Ed, but I don't see how Joe 3 benefited from his parents' attempted annulment.  In fact, the perception of too readily available annulments may help explain why so few Catholic young people now seek to marry in the Church:

"I am not saying this is an accurate universal portrayal of annulments, but the fact is too many easy annulments have created a distorted perception of Catholic marital teaching. Church leaders, religious media personnel, and faithfully practicing older Catholics desperately need to go outside of the narrow circle of various Catholic media outlets to discover what tens of millions of Catholics, especially young adults, are really thinking about annulments" (Steve Wood, 1/30/16).
