8th Sunday in Ordinary Time (3/3/19) (audio) (signed homily)
- "A Washington Post article first posted online on Jan. 19 reported on a Jan. 18 incident at the Lincoln Memorial. Subsequent reporting, a student’s statement and additional video allow for a more complete assessment of what occurred, either contradicting or failing to confirm accounts provided in that story — including that Native American activist Nathan Phillips was prevented by one student from moving on, that his group had been taunted by the students in the lead-up to the encounter, and that the students were trying to instigate a conflict. The high school student facing Phillips issued a statement contradicting his account; the bishop in Covington, Ky., apologized for the statement condemning the students; and an investigation conducted for the Diocese of Covington and Covington Catholic High School found the students’ accounts consistent with videos. Subsequent Post coverage, including video, reported these developments: “Viral standoff between a tribal elder and a high schooler is more complicated than it first seemed”; “Kentucky bishop apologizes to Covington Catholic students, says he expects their exoneration”; “Investigation finds no evidence of ‘racist or offensive statements’ in Mall incident.” A Jan. 22 correction to the original story reads: Earlier versions of this story incorrectly said that Native American activist Nathan Phillips fought in the Vietnam War. Phillips said he served in the U.S. Marines but was never deployed to Vietnam." (Washington Post, 3/1/19)

- "As the latest sexual-abuse crisis to plague the Church has continued to unfold, I am convinced that we are still in the early stages of this cataclysmic, if providential, event....Only by identifying the poisons of predatory homosexuality, licentiousness of every kind, poor formation and worldliness, and ultimately the abuse of power that has shielded all such behavior among clergy and professed religious can these scourges be removed. The Church identified the poison in McCarrick, but there are many more toxic situations yet to be uncovered and dealt with decisively" (National Catholic Register, 2/21/19).
- Excommunication, Abortion and Catholic Lawmakers: What Can Be Done? Bishop Edward Scharfenberger of Albany, New York, discusses possible canon-law responses in the wake of New York State’s new legislation that removed third-trimester-abortion restrictions (National Catholic Register, 2/21/19)
- "In 1968 only 338 annulments were granted in the United States. Today, the U.S. church approves more than 50,000 every year. 'An annulment is, essentially, a conclusion based upon evidence that (what) would appear to have been a solid and binding marriage was, in fact, not,' said Monsignor Edward Scharfenberger, judicial vicar of the Dioceses of New York. But while it's a process that allows thousands of divorced Catholics to participate, it is pushing away many others who believe it is hypocritical....The controversy was brought to the attention of the nation recently by Sheila Rauch Kennedy, who is appealing the annulment of her 12-year marriage to Democrat U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy of Massachusetts....'The problem is that unquestionably in Western society many marriages are not properly founded,' Scharfenberger said" (CNN, 7/6/97).
- "Young Kennedy[i.e., Rep Joseph Kennedy III]’s father, former Rep. Joseph Kennedy Jr., will be remembered for trying to annul his 12-year marriage to Sheila Rauch Kennedy so he could marry his second wife. Rauch’s best-selling book, 'Shattered Faith: A Woman’s Struggle to Stop the Catholic Church from Annulling Her Marriage,' upended father Joe’s Senate bid [Actually, it was a bid for governor.]; a decade later, the church reversed the annulment."(amNewYork, 2/5/18)
