5th Sunday of Lent (4/7/19) (audio) ()
- Made for Love (MUR e-news) April 2019
- "The sex-abuse scandal has led many to lose their faith, and as we learn more about the extent and nature of the corruption, many more will be tempted to leave. Those of us who are 'red-pilled' need to be cautious.... The expression refers to a moment in the 1999 film The Matrix wherein the main character choses to take a pill that will wake him up to reality no matter how 'gritty and painful'.... Those who are red-pilled seem like alarmists to those who are not....the truth about our Church is going to disappoint, depress and demoralize us, and the more so the more 'red-pilled' we get, but we cannot let these dismal truths derail us. We are living in the time God chose for us. We must be determined to embrace our faith all the more and let nothing deprive us of the most precious gift we have: our faith" (Prof Janet Smith, 3/30/19).
- It's not long since the last round of church and school closings, yet in "announcing their compensation funds, the Pennsylvania bishops pointed to the New York compensations funds, noting that they’d paid out '$200 million in compensation to more than 1,000 survivors.' That’s an average of $200,000 per victim....The Archdiocese of Philadelphia compensation fund has announced that 'eligible claims will be paid within two weeks'" (The Daily Item, 12/6/18)
- "thousands of young adults hold such a low view of a sacramental church wedding that they are increasingly avoiding it....What Catholic marriages really need, especially in Europe and North America, is practical and effective assistance in healing hurting marriages in order to reduce the Catholic divorce rate" (Steve Wood, August 2014).
- "In a review of available scientific literature, three physician-researchers have found evidence that women using hormonal birth control do conceive children, who are then destroyed by the chemicals in an early abortion. Researchers Donna Harrison, Cara Buskmiller, and Monique Chireau published 'Systematic Review of Ovarian Activity and Potential for Embryo Formation and Loss during the Use of Hormonal Contraception' in the January 2019 Linacre Quarterly, a peer-reviewed publication of the Catholic Medical Association" (Martin Barillas, 3/29/19).
- As per Archbishop Chaput , "ongoing cultural realignment will shake many of our Church institutions, from urban parishes, to schools, universities, hospitals, and other agencies – even seminaries" (Archbishop Chaput, 3/27/19). Let's NOT sit idly while it happens!
- John Haas, PhD, and his National Catholic Bioethics Center have the USCCB's ear in promoting two positions which faithful Catholic physicians say have tragically wrong assumptions! Haas now doubles as the head of moral theology at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary.
