- Pope Francis meets with Fr. James Martin at Vatican (CNA, 9/30/19)
"Earlier this month, Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia urged caution about Martin’s message after the priest spoke at a Philadelphia university. 'Father Martin has sought in a dedicated way to accompany and support people with same-sex attraction and gender dysphoria. Many of his efforts have been laudable, and we need to join him in stressing the dignity of persons in such situations,' Archbishop Charles Chaput wrote in a Sept. 19 column published on his archdiocesan website. 'At the same time, a pattern of ambiguity in his teachings tends to undermine his stated aims, alienating people from the very support they need for authentic human flourishing. Due to the confusion caused by his statements and activities regarding same-sex related (LGBT) issues, I find it necessary to emphasize that Father Martin does not speak with authority on behalf of the Church, and to caution the faithful about some of his claims,' Chaput added."- Understanding Father James Martin, S.J. (10/9/17)
- Right there in my own copy of the book, Archbishop Chaput calls Father Martin's Jesus: A Pilgrimage "a delight to read and a work of substance for the committed Christian." As the site of Jesus's first miracle is of such enormous significance to husbands and wives, I had the opportunity to ask Father Martin himself why he did not include Cana in his book. Personally, I found his answer unsatisfying. Elsewhere, I found an online video, which makes me wonder whether Father Martin is hampered by a clericalism that prevents him from "getting it": "We visited a church there, where we all renewed our vows, whether we were married, single, vowed or religious. It was a wonderful way of once again saying yes to God." Father Martin is not evidencing appreciation for the unique theological significance of authentic marriage between a man and a woman, which signifies God's love for His people.
