- As the site of Jesus's first miracle is of such enormous significance to husbands and wives, I had the opportunity to ask Father James Martin, SJ, why he did not include Cana in his book, "Jesus: A Pilgrimage." To his credit, Father Martin did send an answer to my emailed question.
While I found Father Martin's answer unsatisfying, his online video gets to the heart of my suspicion that plain old bigotry of clericalism prevents him from "getting it"about Cana and authentic marriage/family: "We visited a church there, where we all renewed our vows, whether we were married, single, vowed or religious. It was a wonderful way of once again saying yes to God."
Father Martin is not evidencing appreciation for the unique theological significance of authentic marriage between a man and a woman, which signifies God's love for His people. Most tragically, few bishops and priests are calling him on this - likely because they don't "get it" either.

Is he truly being pastoral, or is he just another practitioner of clericalism, which fails to truly appreciate the Sacrament of Matrimony?
