HB300/SB300: "Simply put,
this legislation is intolerant and prejudiced against people of faith" (Pennsylvania
Catholic Conference). The Pa Catholic Conference has long had a special web
site to ask your state representative and state senator to oppose HB300/SB300: https://www.votervoice.net/PACC/Campaigns/33451/Respond.
As per a 12-18-13 mailing from the Pennsylvania Family Council, "In 2010, when seeking the office of Governor, Tom Corbett indicated he would oppose such legislation....We encourage you to join us in E-mailing, phoning or writing to Gov. Corbett to express your disappointment and to ask the governor to reconsider his position, in light of his stated position as recent as our 2010 Voter's Guide, and because of the far-reaching threat to religious freedom from such legislation"
SB 872, "Prohibiting mental health
professionals from engaging in sexual orientation change efforts with an
individual under 18 years of age" - Pa's Version of NJ's S2278
Last August, New Jersey's allegedly "Pro Life / Pro Family" governor signed S2278 into law. A heartfelt letter from a NJ couple in yesterday's Courier Times indicates why this was so wrong: "Orientation therapy has already helped many people change and
live happy and stable heterosexual lives....orientation
therapy is not at all harmful for minors whose goal it is to overcome
having same-sex attraction. Views to the contrary are based on
incorrect, non-scientific beliefs that disregard empirical evidence....Nicholas Cummings, a former president of the
American Psychological Association, writes that 'contending that all
same-sex attraction is immutable (unchangeable) is a distortion of
reality.'"
In contrast to philosophies behind SB 872 and S 2278, eminent Catholic psychiatrist Dr. Rick Fitzgibbons of Montgomery County maintains that "Youth have the right to be provided informed consent about the serious medical and psychiatric illnesses, and risks, of the homosexual lifestyle. Pediatricians, mental health professionals, physicians, nurses and school counselors have a clear legal responsibility to do so, and parents, family members, educators, and clergy a grave moral responsibility" (Same-Sex Attractions in Youth and Their Right to Informed Consent, 5/21/12).
