Subject: Call your state rep now on an important pro-life issue

Dear Pro-Life Leaders,

Please call and email your state representative now with this important message: "I do not want my right to vote for judges to be taken away. Please oppose House Bill 111!"

Pro-abortion groups such as the ACLU, the Women's Law Project, and billionaire abortion backer George Soros want to take away your right to vote for judges for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, the Superior Court, and the Commonwealth. Instead, they want a pro-abortion Governor to appoint these judges based on a list of names submitted by a small, elite group of unelected, unaccountable people. That's why we need to work to defeat House Bill 111, which would set up a system of so-called "merit selection" of judges—taking away the people's right to vote for these important office holders.

If you don't know who your state representative is, or you need contact information, please visit http://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/home/findyourlegislator/#address .

Thank you for making these critical calls and sending these important emails!

All the best,

State Issues (6/27/17 update)

Pa Catholic Conference

Prioritize Funding for Women's Primary Health Care
"Health care facilities that provide a wide range of women's services should have priority for receiving our limited federal and state tax dollars over those that offer limited services and focus on abortion....Please support Senate Bill 300."
"The positive, prospective changes in SB 261 will hold more abusers accountable for their crimes and will require all organizations, public and private, to improve their vigilance for keeping the children in their care safe. The Senate determined that amendments to allow retroactive lawsuits to be filed would be unconstitutional in Pennsylvania.  Regardless, it is definitely unfair to today's individual Catholics. Bankrupting my parish, Catholic school, or diocese today penalizes the wrong people for the crimes of the past."
While the Pa Catholic Conference is supporting SB 554, the  fact that Senator Daylin Leach is one of its prime sponsors suggests that there should be careful assessment of  whether this legislation and its implications are truly consistent with Catholic teaching
"House Bill 250, which would increase tax credits available under the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program by $50 million (raising it to $175 million) and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) program by $25 million (raising it to $75 million), overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support....urge all lawmakers to invest in success and support the expansion of the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) programs by voting YES on a state budget that includes an increase in the programs' line items."
What "Government School" Means (NYTimes, 7/31/17)
While this article tries to associate any MODERN critiques of public schools with historical racism and "anti-Catholicism," it particularly fails to make the latter connection.
After passing both chambers, are we shamefully seeing SB 3 stalemated and HB 77 stalemated?
Federal issue - "Urge our [United States] Senators to support H.R. 7 to permanently protect our tax dollars from paying for or promoting elective abortions."
"proposals which seek to add 'gender identity or expression' and 'sexual orientation' to Pennsylvania's non-discrimination law....[are] intolerant and prejudiced against people of faith"

FW: Act Now to Support Increasing Education Tax Credits!

Subject: Act Now to Support Increasing Education Tax Credits!

Pennsylvania's constitutional deadline of June 30 to pass a state budget is quickly approaching.House Bill 250, which would increase tax credits available under the Educational Improvement Tax Credit
Pennsylvania's constitutional deadline of June 30 to pass a state budget is quickly approaching.

House Bill 250, which would increase tax credits available under the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program by $50 million (raising it to $175 million) and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) program by $25 million (raising it to $75 million), overwhelmingly passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support.

Budget negotiations are taking place and this issue is currently being considered, so NOW is the time to remind members of the House to maintain support for an increase and to urge state senators to follow suit by voting for EITC and OSTC increases!

The EITC and the OSTC programs have always achieved bipartisan support and have been acclaimed as two of the best educational programs Pennsylvania offers to students in both public and private schools.

The tax credit scholarships have been an investment that has paid dividends for students seeking a Catholic or other private education in Pennsylvania. Every Catholic school in all corners of this great Commonwealth benefits from the EITC or OSTC programs.

Each year more than 40,000 families get a scholarship that permits the parents to send their children to a school that best meets their needs. It gives these families a true choice in the right educational path for their children.

We need your help to urge all lawmakers to invest in success and support the expansion of the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) programs by voting YES on a state budget that includes an increase in the programs' line items.

Jesus' grandparents

"An ancient story dating to the first centuries of the Church’s life recalls how Saints Anne and Joachim, like Abraham and Sarah, were scorned by their neighbors because they had no children.

"Years of longing did not weaken their trust in God, but grief eventually drove Saint Joachim into the wilderness to fast and pray. Saint Anne, remaining at home, dressed in mourning clothes and wept because she had no child of her own. Seeing her mistress distressed, a servant girl reminded Anne to put her trust in God. Saint Anne washed her face, put on her bridal clothes and went to a garden to plead with God for a child.

"Angels appeared to Saint Anne in her garden and Saint Joachim in the desert, promising that, despite their old age, they would give birth to a child who would be known throughout the world. The new parents ran to meet one another at Jerusalem’s Golden Gate, and with a kiss rejoiced in the new life which God had promised would be theirs.

"Saints Anne and Joachim are powerful intercessors for all married couples, expectant mothers and married couples who are having difficulty conceiving, as well as all who have grown old" (U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops).
