Urgent: Tell Congress to Protect Marriage

The Obama administration has just announced that they will no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court. In a statement released to the media, Attorney General Eric Holder explained that President Obama has decided that the definition of marriage contained in DOMA is unconstitutional, and has ordered that the Department of Justice should abdicate its constitutional duty and no longer defend DOMA against constitutional challenges.

But it’s not too late. Attorney General Holder admitted that Congress now has the ability to step in and defend DOMA. And that’s why we need your help.

Congress has the authority to independently defend the laws which it has passed. Congress must intervene to defend DOMA in federal court – especially now that the Department of Justice has formally announced that it will no longer do so.

Fw: Time to overwhelm the Senate!

As per the below forward from CatholicVote.org, it is vital that we let our U.S. Senators - Bob Casey, Jr. (202-224-6324) and Pat Toomey (202-224-4254) - know that we want Planned Parenthood defunded.

Senator Bob Casey, Jr. could certainly be described as one of the "'swing votes' in the Senate...up for re-election in 2012." With regard to pro life concerns, it would be generous to even describe Casey' record as reliably inconsisent....

In addition to contacting the senators themselves, please contact Senator Casey's and Senator Toomey's bishops (i.e., the
Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera of Scranton (570-207-2238) & the Most Reverend John O. Barres of Allentown (610-437-0755), respectively) asking the bishops to also request that the senators to work to defund Planned Parenthood....

D
ear CV Friend, Help us overwhelm the Senate!

Your calls and your prayers worked! Planned Parenthood is hysterical.

Moments ago the U.S. House passed the Pence Amendment 240-185 ending federal funding for Planned Parenthood through the end of the year (don’t worry, a permanent end to their funding is around the corner!).

This is a giant victory. But don’t celebrate yet.

Once approved, the “Continuing Resolution” will head to the Senate where the votes needed to approve the Pence language are hanging by threads.

Chip in $10 today to help us put the heat on the Senate!

The momentum is on our side. Legislators are fired up and acting with courage. The majority of Americans – Republicans and many Democrats - are with us.

But the abortion lobby is preparing to pounce on the Senate. Think about it – they have over $360 million annually at stake!

Planned Parenthood will throw every dollar they have at the Senate to save their taxpayer-funded money line. They are opening new clinics everywhere – including massive abortion supercenters in Illinois and Houston and elsewhere – knowing that taxpayers will pick up the tab.

We can stop this. We must stop this.

Whatever funds we raise will be turned into radio, Internet and a massive grassroots lobbying campaign to fight for this legislation in the Senate. Many of the “swing votes” in the Senate are up for re-election in 2012, and they know this issue could decide their future.

Please chip in $5, $10, $100, or whatever you can today.

The Senate knows this legislation must be passed quickly or the government could be shut down.

Building a Culture of Life is difficult enough; the least we can do is stop sending our money to those fighting against us.

Before you do anything, please take a few seconds and say a prayer of thankgiving for today's vote. And pray for continued success as we head to the Senate.

Sincerely,

Brian Burch, President
CatholicVote.org

P.S. Question: Who is the biggest annual donor to Planned Parenthood? Answer: WE ARE! But that could end if we act now. The House has voted to put a stop to this outrage. Now the Senate must do the same.

We need your help to fund a massive campaign to put the pressure on the Senate.

"support Amendment #11 to CR1 and take all federal money away from Planned Parenthood"

Call Now to Defund Planned Parenthood

ACTION ALERT

FOR ALL WHO SIGNED OUR STOP PLANNED PARENTHOOD TAX FUNDING PETITION

ACTION NEEDED

We can end federal funding of Planned Parenthood, but we need your help right now.

The Continuing Resolution (see below) is being discussed RIGHT NOW, so you need to make contact immediately. Call your members of Congress and tell them to support Amendment #11 to CR1 and take all federal money away from Planned Parenthood.

If you do not know who your member of Congress is, you can call the House switchboard, 202-224-3121, and they can tell you. Your calls are needed today!

Here is the explanation of what is going on:

Planned Parenthood is in trouble

Planned Parenthood, which has always tried to convince the public and lawmakers that it is a "trusted" provider of womens reproductive health services, is in trouble.

Recent public disclosures of what goes on behind the doors of Planned Parenthood have tarnished its image and emboldened lawmakers to seriously go after its taxpayer funding.

In recent issues of this Wednesday STOPP Report we have brought you the stories as they unfolded (click here to see back issues).

In New York, New Jersey, Virginia and Washington, DC, Planned Parenthood has been caught on tape by Live Action films helping "sex traffickers" in their business

In Tennessee, and elsewhere, parents are actively fighting against Planned Parenthood sex education programs.

Pro-life groups across the country are calling for the defunding of Planned Parenthood and holding vigils to call attention to this demand.

Planned Parenthood reacts

Planned Parenthood has been under attack before, but this time is different. This time, Planned Parenthood understands that its taxpayer funding is vulnerable. It also knows that, if it loses its taxpayer funding, it is essentially out of business.

When Medicaid reimbursements are added to its other government grants and contracts, the majority of Planned Parenthoods income is from the American taxpayer. Thats right, over 50% of Planned Parenthoods income is from us and, right now, there is a real possibility it may be taken away.

As a result, Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, has released a one minute video desperately asking its supporters to help.

The video can be seen at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kuz3fB1yRbs&feature=player_embedded

Can you just feel the desperation in her voice?

The Continuing Resolution and Planned Parenthood

The United States government works on a fiscal year that begins on October 1 of one year and goes to September 30 of the following year. The last Congress did not approve a budget for the current fiscal year, so the current Congress is actually trying to handle bills for two separate fiscal years.

For the current fiscal year (October 1, 2010 through September 30, 2011), Congress is dealing with a Continuing Resolution to keep the governments doors open. This has nothing to do with the Obamas proposed budget (see next story).

The official designation of the bill is Continuing Resolution 1 (CR 1). As we are writing this WSR, Congress is actively working on CR 1.

There are several provisions of CR 1 that would affect Planned Parenthood:

  • The CR currently eliminates all money to the Title X family planning program. PP gets over $75 million a year from this program.

  • The CR includes the Mexico City Policy a provision to ensure no international population planning and population assistance funding is provided to foreign nongovernmental organizations that promote or perform elective abortion. This, too, would take millions from Planned Parenthood.

  • The CR prohibits funding for UNFPA and deletes a $55 million earmark for UNFPA. Planned Parenthood works with the UNFPA and, therefore, some of this money goes indirectly to PP.

In addition, there are a couple of proposed amendments to CR 1 that directly affect PP:

  • Amendment #11 submitted by Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) is the most devastating amendment from Planned Parenthoods perspective. It would prevent any funds made available under the CR from being provided to Planned Parenthood. The amendment states "None of the funds made available by this Act may be made available for any purpose to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc. or any of the following affiliates of Planned Parenthood Federation of American, Inc." and lists all Planned Parenthood Affiliates. This amendment, if included in the bill, would take away all federal government money from Planned Parenthood until, at least, September 30, 2011.

  • Amendment #262 submitted by Rep. Bob Latta (R-OH) would eliminate all $440 million allocated for international population control, family planning and reproductive health. Planned Parenthood receives millions of dollars from these funds through its affiliates in countries all over the world.

Planned Parenthood supporters in Congress are not only opposing these amendments, but are introducing amendments to restore funding for Title X and for other programs

The New Budget and Planned Parenthood

In addition to the Continuing Resolution, Congress is also beginning to deal with the budget for the United States for the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2011 and continuing through September 30, 2012.

This is the Obama budget that has been in the news this week along with the statements that the Republicans will be cutting that budget.

This is totally separate from the Continuing Resolution and you can be assured that many members of Congress will be looking to keep Planned Parenthood out of that budget also.

We will be bringing you information on this budget as events unfold over the next few months.

Remember: ACT NOW

Planned Parenthood is scared (just listen to Ceciles voice on the video link above). Now is the time to put pressure on Congress and end its funding. We have been shown by recent world events that power is in people speaking out together and in great numbers. We can change America and we can stop the funding of Planned Parenthood. But, we must all work together and join our voices for this to happen. PLEASE, do not sit this one out. Tell you members of Congress we want NO MONEY TO PLANNED PARENTHOOD.

Dear Friend of CV,

Please don’t delete this! Time is of the essence.

As you read this message, Congress is right now debating a bill to fund our government.

The debate over a temporary budget will also include a key vote on whether Planned Parenthood will continue to received millions of taxpayer dollars --- our money!

Now is the time to cut Planned Parenthood off the federal dole.

We spoke yesterday with the office of Indiana Rep. Mike Pence, and he needs our help. They need all pro-life voters to contact their Representative and ask them to support the Pence Amendment to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood.

This vote relates to the temporary funding “Continuing Resolution” that will keep our government funded through the end of the year. Rep. Pence will introduce an amendment that would prohibit any federal funds this year from going to Planned Parenthood.

This vote could happen as early as tomorrow. Please stop what you are doing and call now!

Call the Capitol Hill switchboard: (202) 224-3121
Tell your Representative: Support the Pence Amendment!

Of course, not every Member of Congress is pro-life. But you don’t have to be 100% pro-life to support this amendment. Our government is out of money. The last place our dollars should be going is to Big Abortion.

The first objection you will likely hear is: “This money does not pay for abortions but pays for women’s health.”

But everyone knows that funds are fungible. Taxpayers provide Planned Parenthood $363 million a year. That means one-third of Planned Parenthood’s annual budget comes from the hard working Americans – including you and me! If our tax money is paying for salaries, or rent or other expenses, that frees up their other money to be spent on abortion.

And abortion is what Planned Parenthood does. They are responsible for nearly one-quarter, or over 324,000, abortions in the United States every year. It’s an outrage that taxpayers have to support Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood has declared an emergency. Tens of thousands of their members are calling to protect this funding.

Your representative needs to hear from you. Before it’s too late.

Please call your Representative today at (202) 224-3121.

Tell them to support the Pence Amendment to the CR (Amendment #11).

Sincerely,

- Your Friends at CatholicVote

P.S. If you are uncertain who your representative is, you can look them up here with your zip code:

Ask Casey, Fitzpatrick & Murphy to Demand Vigorously Prosecution of Pornography

Tell your congressmen: 'Sign the letter'

For three decades AFA has been in the forefront of the battle against pornography.
February 9, 2011

Dear Friend,

Critical to AFA's efforts has always been to demand that the U.S. Department of Justice enforce federal laws against illegal adult pornography or "obscenity" as it is called. The U.S. Supreme Court has affirmed that the First Amendment does NOT protect obscene material and federal laws prohibit distribution of obscene adult pornography on the Internet, on cable/satellite TV (including pay-per-view) and thus on hotel/motel television, through the mail, and in retail outlets.

Yet, there have been NO federal indictments for obscenity in two years by the U.S. Department of Justice. Now we have learned that U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has shut down the Obscenity Prosecution Task Force. WE NEED TO ACT NOW. Pornography is causing widespread devastation in America, ruining marriages, causing addictions to children and adults, causing violence against women, and leading to prostitution and sex trafficking.

A letter from Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and U.S. Representatives Mike McIntyre (D-NC) and Randy Forbes (R-VA) addressed to Attorney General Eric Holder requests that he begin vigorously prosecuting major producers and distributors of illegal adult pornography. Senator Hatch and Representatives McIntyre and Forbes are circulating these letters now to all Members of Congress urging them to co-sign with them. They need your help as a voter to get your senators and house member to co-sign these letters to Attorney General Holder.

Stepping Up to the Plate

Please include this information in your weekly bulletin....

The elections have passed, and now it's time for our elected officials to step up to the plate. There are at least five pieces of proposed pro life legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives:

Please contact the office of Congressman Fitzpatrick (202 225 4276; katie.wise@mail.house.gov), thanking him for his co-sponsorship of H.R. 3, No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, and asking for co-sponsorship and support of those other bills.

Two of these bills have senate versions, but neither has received co-sponsorship from our two U.S. Senators. Please contact the offices of Senator Robert Casey ( sharon.lynett@gmail.com) & Senator Patrick Toomey (pat@toomey.senate.gov), urging co-sponsorship and support of

In the Pennsylvania Senate, Senate Bill 3 deserves support. As per the Pennsylvania Family Institute, “The bill would respect the conscience and respect for life of millions of Pennsylvanians, and ensure that their tax dollars do not subsidize abortion coverage through the back door of the new state insurance exchanges.” Kudos to Senator Greenleaf for supporting Senate Bill 3 in the Banking and Insurance Committee. Please thank Senator Greenleaf (sgreenleaf@pasenate.gov) and urge Senators Tomlinson (rtomlinson@pasenate.gov), Mensch (bmensch@pasenate.gov), and McIlhinney (cMcilhinney@pasenate.gov) to support Senate Bill 3.

Pennsylvania Needs Bill to Stop Abortion Funding in ObamaCare

by Steven Ertelt LifeNews.com 2/7/11 1:08 PM

One of the big questions in Pennsylvania right now is whether state lawmakers will listen to the voice of the people and pass a measure that will allow the Keystone State to opt out of abortion funding in the insurance exchanges created by President Barack Obama’s health care law.

A Quinnipiac University poll conducted last year found that 67 percent of the Americans surveyed opposed funding abortion with federal funds under so-called health care reform. With nearly 7 in 10 Americans objecting to this funding scheme, it would appear that public officials would be committing political suicide if they refused to fix the abortion funding problem in Obamacare.

And yet, pro-abortion forces are firing back. Planned Parenthood, facing allegations of turning a blind eye to human trafficking, and the Women’s Law Project have been claiming that the common sense Pennsylvania Senate Bill 3 would “imperil women,” as a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review headline screamed.

In actuality, all that the modest Senate Bill 3 would do is ensure that Pennsylvania is not forced into the abortion business as a result of the health care reform mess.

As Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation Legislative Director Charlene Bashore was quoted as saying, “Congress said states have the right to opt out of abortion coverage and we want to ensure that for the state of Pennsylvania. All we’re saying is we don’t want taxpayer money used for abortions.”

The abortion lobby, in a curious public relations ploy, is claiming that, if women do not receive abortion coverage under health care reform, they’ll be pushed to go to low-cost abortionists who are of substandard “quality.”

Certainly, the grisly case of West Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell, who is charged with killing seven babies with scissors and murdering one mother, teaches a number of lessons. But the take-away should not be that the safety of abortion will only improve if the government pays for it.

The lessons are these: abortion is an inherently dangerous business, lethal for children and harmful for women. When state regulators play politics with abortion center regulation, women’s health and safety are sacrificed on the altar of political convenience. Roe v. Wade does not prevent back alley abortions—it enables them.

No amount of pro-abortion public relations savvy can cover up the bitter truth—the public should not be forced to subsidize a business that claims innocent human lives and wounds women. Public dollars should be spent on supporting life—not destroying it.

Action Item: Pennsylvania residents should contact their state Senators at 717-787-2121 and urge them to support Senate Bill 3. If you don’t know who your state Senator is, contact the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation at paprolife.org or by calling 717-541-0034.
