While the Pa Catholic Conference is supporting SB 554, doesn't the  fact that Senator Daylin Leach is one of its prime sponsors suggest that there should be careful assessment of  whether this legislation and its implications are truly consistent with Catholic teaching?
    End Brutal Dismemberment Abortions
After passing both chambers, are we shamefully seeing SB 3 stalemated and HB 77 stalemated?

Your Support Helps HLI Defend Life & Family Around the World!

    Dear Faithful,

The United Nations Human Rights Committee, despite its name, regularly attacks nations with pro-life laws. Now the Committee had gone a terrible step further; its latest ambition is to deny the Unborn the Right to Life. Currently, The United Nations' International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) reads in Article 6: "Every human being has the inherent right to life. This right shall be protected by law. No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his life."

To stop the Committee from making abortion a "right", which would open the door to abortion in all its terrible forms, Human Life International has joined with C-FAM, the Center for Family and Human Rights, and six other groups in sponsoring a crucial petition on the Right to Life in international law. This petition will be delivered in by October and insist that the United Nations must not be allowed to redefine natural law.

Friends, we ask that you sign this petition. The goal? Over 100,000 signatories. Please click on this email link to sign the petition
and support us and our other partners in this effort: the Susan B. Anthony List, The Family Research Council, United Families International, United Families International, Americans United for Life, The American Principles Project and Concerned Women for America. And pray, that our enemies may be confounded. For "blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord" (Psalm 39).

    Sincerely yours in Christ,

    Fr. Shenan J. Boquet

NCOSE calls for amending the Communication Decency Act (Section 230), to fight online sex trafficking

On EWTN News Nightly (9/20/17), the National Center on Sexual Exploitation's Haley Halverson explained why Congress must amend Communications Decency Act, Section 230.

As per a 9/20/17 email from Human Life Action: "This is 'appropriations season' on the Hill. That means Congress must pass funding legislation for Fiscal Year 2018.... Last Thursday, the House of Representatives approved HR 3354, Make America Secure and Prosperous Appropriations Act, 2018. It includes the full text of the Conscience Protection Act (CPA) of 2017! It also includes other provisions which we have taken action on such as the nullification of the DC law that legalized assisted suicide and the DC Reproductive Health Non-Discrimination Act (RHNDA), a DC law....There are many other pro-life provisions (both longstanding and new) in the funding bill as well, such as a prohibition on funding elective abortions for detainees of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and against funding for research involving human fetal tissue from abortions....Of the new provisions, our top priority is to ensure that the CPA is included.... rather than finalizing the FY 2018 appropriations legislation by the end of the fiscal year (September 30), both the House and the Senate passed a Continuing Resolution to fund the government at its current levels with current policies until December 8, 2017....I again urge you to continue contacting your members of Congress. It is particularly important that the Senate know that our top priority is inclusion of the Conscience Protection Act in the year-end appropriations legislation."

    Subject: PA Pro-Life Legislative Alert

    Dear Pro-Life Leaders,

Please call and email your state Senators and urge them to support House Bill 1139, which strengthens our Newborn Protection Act.

This bill will expand the number of options for women who give birth and who believe they cannot care for their newborn children.  To read more about the bill, see the co-sponsorship memo at http://www.legis.state.pa.us//cfdocs/Legis/CSM/showMemoPublic.cfm?chamber=H&SPick=20170&cosponId=23257 .

If you don't know who your state Senator is, or you need contact information, please go to http://www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/home/findyourlegislator/#address .

This is a state bill, not a federal one, so you do not need to contact Senators Pat Toomey or Bob Casey.

The bill has already passed the House—a victory in the Senate would bring us much closer to final victory—and help save lives!

Thank you for making these important calls and sending these critical emails.

    All the best,

    "Throwaway Children"

The historical novelist Caleb Carr recently presented a crime novel (cf., https://www.amazon.com/Surrender-New-York-Caleb-Carr/dp/0399591559), which largely dealt with present day children described as "throwaway."  Carr describes yet more victims of a society in which many place minimal value on the sanctity of human life.

"According to the National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway and Throwaway Children, more than 2,100 children are reported missing every day in America. Add to that the fact that 1 in 6 runaways is likely to become a victim of sex trafficking, and the need to urgently deal with this crisis becomes clear....

[Legislation needs to] "allow victims of sex trafficking to seek justice against websites that knowingly facilitate crimes against them; eliminate federal liability protections for websites that assist, support or facilitate a violation of federal trafficking laws; enable state law-enforcement officials, not just the U.S. Department of Justice, to take action against individuals or businesses that violate federal sex- trafficking laws"

The Charter for Health Care Workers and Conscience Protection

In his magnificent Evangelium Vitae, Saint Pope John Paul II reminded us that health care workers are called "to be guardians and servants of human life."  Shortly thereafter, the Vatican provided its beautiful Charter for Health Care Workers, making clear that
this noble calling applies to "doctors, nurses, hospital chaplains, men and women religious, administrators, voluntary care givers for those who suffer, those involved in the diagnosis, treatment and recovery of human health....

"To serve life is to serve God in the person: it is to become 'a collaborator with God in restoring health to the sick body'[16] and to give praise and glory to God in the loving welcome to life, especially if it be weak and ill.[17]....

      "the
therapeutic ministry of health care workers is a sharing in the pastoral[21] and evangelizing[22] work of the Church....

"In fidelity to the moral law, the health care worker actuates his fidelity to the human person whose worth is guaranteed by the law, and to God, Whose wisdom is expressed by the law....
"The present charter wants to guarantee the ethical fidelity of the health care worker: the choices and behavior enfleshing service to life."
Shouldn't we be vigilantly requiring the authenticity of our witness to life in ourselves, our communities, our parishes, and our institutions?  We must "Urge Congress to Enact the Conscience Protection Act of 2017!"

While the Charter's 2017 updating does not yet seem to be available in English, Vatican Radio (2/6/17) has reported that "The new references of the Magisterium, after 1994, that appear in the Charter are:
In addition to vigilantly requiring "ethical fidelity" in ourselves, our communities, our parishes, and our institutions, we should forthrightly demand that our right to live and work with "ethical fidelity" be respected in "the choices and behavior enfleshing service to life"....

The eyes of Andrea Boceli appear to see so much more than those of James Martin, SJ!

    • Though Jesuit Father James Martin's book on the Holy Land (Jesus: A Pilgrimage, 2016) has an Imprimi Potest, it includes (in my opinion) some excessive speculation and some snarky comments: "Then I saw the Jordan River. It was neon green, more like Mountain Dew than water. 'I told you it was gross,' said [fellow Jesuit priest] George" (p.98).
    • "Italian star tenor Andrea Bocelli made a pilgrimage to the traditional site of Jesus’ baptism Monday, praying for peace as he stood on the edge of the River Jordan.  Bocelli, 58, who is blind, was guided by a priest who scooped up river water and poured it over the singer’s hands. The artist, a Roman Catholic, made a sign of the cross and the priest recited the Ave Maria (Hail Mary) prayer.  The spot represents the 'roots of my faith,' Bocelli told The Associated Press. 'For this reason, it is a very special place. I am very happy to be here. I prayed for peace in the world'"  (Washington Post, 9/18/17)
At the site of Jesus' Baptism, the Jordan River appears to be not much wider than the Delaware Canal!  It also serves as an international boundary.  While Boceli visited from the Jordanian side, this blogger visited from the opposite banks on March 13th of this past year.
