Anyone old enough to recall the early days of Saturday Night Live will remember how the character Emily Litella offered heated opinion pieces. Whatever the issue, it would turn out that she had misunderstood something crucial. One episode featured Litella's passionate complaints about a news item on a deaf penalty, when the story had been about the death penalty. Whether it's deliberate or not, the Associated Press' Vatican correspondent Nicole Winfield appears to be following in the footsteps of Emily Litella!
With the current Synod coming to a close, many early reports are showing themselves to have been inaccurate. A tremendous amount of what's reported in the secular media about the Church comes via the Associated Press. In the same era as the early days of Saturday Night Live, we would be reminded that all news in the Soviet Union was channeled through the official news source - Tass. How ironic that we have largely become subjected to a single source of print news!
Like Emily Litella, Nicole Winfield has a platform to contribute clarity or to contribute confusion.
