Mike Pence Won't Vote For CR: 'It's Time to Take a Stand'
Tuesday, March 15, 2011
(CNSNews.com) - Add another Republican to the list of lawmakers who are refusing to support another short-term Continuing Resolution (CR) to keep the government funded.
Enough is enough, Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) said in a statement issued on Tuesday: "It's time to take a stand for taxpayers and future generations. I will not vote for the short-term Continuing Resolution," he said.
The short-term CR that the House is set to vote on today would avert a government shutdown and give lawmakers more time to negotiate difficult spending cuts. However, the CR under consideration does not include language sponsored by Rep. Pence that would defund Planned Parenthood, nor does it include language promoted by Rep. Steve King (R.-Iowa) and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R.-Minn.) that would completely terminate funding for the implementation of the health-care law President Barack Obama signed last March.
The CR will fund the government through Friday. The CR the House will vote on today would keep the government funded for another three weeks.
Pence noted that things don't change in Washington "until they have to."
“With a $14 trillion national debt and a $1.65 trillion deficit, our federal government is facing a fiscal crisis of unprecedented proportions." Pence also noted that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has denounced proposed Republican budget cuts as "mean-spirited, reckless and irresponsible."
"Is it reckless and irresponsible to ask for $61 billion in cuts when the national debt is 230 times that amount?" Pence asked.
“By giving liberals in the Senate another three weeks of negotiations, we will only delay a confrontation that must come. I say, ‘Let it come now. It's time to take a stand.’"
Pence conceded that nobody wants a government shutdown, "but unless we take a stand, we will shut down the future for our children and grandchildren."
