Pocono Disappearances

"The Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania have long been a destination for vacationers seeking to relax. The earliest resorts opened in the early 1900s. Known for theater and skiing—and with resorts ranging from affordable to exclusive—it grew in popularity through the 1920s and ’30s. Starting in the ’40s, the region began attracting honeymooners....resorts dedicated to all aspects of honeymoon romance boomed....the love affair with honeymoon resorts wasn’t meant to be. Today, the area is dotted with abandoned resorts" (Roadtrippers, 2/5/19)

Yet, it's not just resorts that have been disappearing in the Poconos....
"Members of three closed Catholic churches in Monroe County are excited about the opportunity to build a new tradition, and a new building, on the campus of Monsignor McHugh School in Cresco.
"In 2011, three churches — St. Ann’s in Tobyhanna, St. Bernadette’s in Canadensis, and St. Mary’s in Mount Pocono — were combined into a new church, called Most Holy Trinity Parish....
"[In 2015], Holy Trinity officially ended weekly Masses at the three sites, and moved them to its new, consolidated home — Monsignor McHugh School....
"[Father Paul] Fontanella says Most Holy Trinity’s leadership believes that the move to McHugh will help strengthen the parish....
"But parishioners say the decision also had to do with financial realities faced by the parish, and an overall shortage of priests in the Catholic Church" (Pocono Record, 6/10/15).

If attendance at Sunday Mass is topping out at under 170, is Most Holy Trinity Parish still considering construction of a new church building...

when there is at least one unused church structure?

"I want to assure you that the diocese will fund the program from its reserves and the sale of assets, as needed. We will not access parish and school assets. We will not tap into contributions or bequests from parishioners."
