Are Patients Declared "Brain Dead" Really Dead? (Healthcare Advocacy and Leadership Organization, 8/11/21)

A Message from The Healthcare Advocacy and Leadership Organization (HALO)

ARE PATIENTS DECLARED "BRAIN DEAD" REALLY DEAD?

By Anne O'Meara
August 11, 2021

Last week on EWTN, Dr. Joseph Eble (a friend of HALO) and Fr. Mitch Pacwa discussed this very question along with the implications this "brain death" classification has on organ donation. Many HALO subscribers listened to this power-packed interview and here is some of what we heard:

......I watched EWTN Live on Wednesday night and found the physician's ......information very interesting. As a former ICU nurse I always believed this ......deep down inside. I always felt uncomfortable as I wheeled many a patient ......to the OR for harvesting organs. But I had no say in the matter. However, ......when my brother had a ruptured aneurysm and was declared "brain dead" ......they kept begging us for his organs. I said no because I suspected that ......somehow someone would make money. We discontinued his life support ......and he died peacefully. This was in 2001. I am glad that this situation is now ......being addressed. -  Dr. JR, PhD, RN

......I always thought organ donations were done immediately at death. Now, I ......know the truth, and have decided to no longer donate my organ(s), because ......my death would not be natural, occurring in the Lord's time frame, ......regardless of my suffering. - SP

......I was watching a program early Sunday morning and a doctor was on ......talking about the sanctity of life as it relates to traumatic injuries and organ ......donation....The medical system is failing our elderly daily and it is a tragedy. ......I feel helpless to fight it but now that I know your organization exists I feel ......better that someone is advocating and working on these issues. - CL

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Healthcare Advocacy and Leadership Organization is to promote, protect, and advocate for the rights of the medically vulnerable through direct patient and family interactions; through intercessory prayer; through community education and awareness programs; and through promotion and development of concrete *"life-affirming healthcare"* alternatives for those facing the grave consequences of healthcare rationing and unethical practices, especially those at risk of euthanasia and assisted suicide.

*"Life-affirming healthcare" is defined as medical care in which the paramount principle is the sanctity of life, which means that the life and safety of each person come first and each person receives medical care across their lifespan based on their need for care and never with an intention to hasten death, regardless of their abilities or perceived "quality of life."
