The Archdiocese of Philadelphia and excommunications....

Jim Thorpe (nee, Mauch Chunk) is home to the former Carbon County Prison, site of several "Molly Maguire" trials and executions.  As per a 1970 film, the Mollies were among Pennsylvania's oppressed Irish coal miners.  At least some Mollies are alleged to have resorted to vigilanteeism, very much coming into conflict with the Church.   Modern romanticization of the locale and the time period may very well obscure the Church's loving, pastoral action....

In the late 19th century, Carbon County was part of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.  Citing the absolute necessity for Catholics to stay out of secret societies, Archbishop James Wood formally excommunicated the Molly Maguires in 1875:

Fast forward to 2012, and one has to wonder why Pennsylvania's Catholic bishops do not take similar, loving action toward politicians who identify themselves as Catholic and proceed to adopt positions which are antithetical to Church teaching.
