As per the Holy Father's message to the first Latin American Congress of Pastoral Care of the Family (8/4/14 to 8/9/14):
- "the family is a 'centre of love', where the law of respect and communion reigns and is able to resist the pressure of manipulation and domination from the world’s 'power centres'....the family constitutes a great and 'rich social resource' (cf. Benedict XVI, Encyclical Letter Caritas in Veritate, n. 44)....I would like to highlight two primary factors: stability and fruitfulness....In it [the family] is reflected the image of God, who in his most profound mystery is a family and, in this manner, He allows human love to be seen as a sign and presence of divine love (Encyclical Letter Lumen Fidei, n. 52). Within the family, faith is absorbed together with mother’s milk. For example, that simple and spontaneous gesture of requesting a blessing, which is cherished in many of our nations, perfectly reflects the biblical conviction according to which God’s blessing is passed on from father to son....May Our Lady of Guadalupe obtain abundant blessings from God for America’s families and make them fonts of life, harmony and robust faith, nourished by the Gospel and by good works."
As per the Holy Father's 8/9/14 letter to the U.N. Secretary General:
- "It is with a heavy and anguished heart that I have been following the dramatic events of these past few days in Northern Iraq where Christians and other religious minorities have been forced to flee from their homes and witness the destruction of their places of worship and religious patrimony....I write to you, Mr Secretary-General, and place before you the tears, the suffering and the heartfelt cries of despair of Christians and other religious minorities of the beloved land of Iraq. In renewing my urgent appeal to the international community to take action to end the humanitarian tragedy now underway, I encourage all the competent organs of the United Nations, in particular those responsible for security, peace, humanitarian law and assistance to refugees, to continue their efforts in accordance with the Preamble and relevant Articles of the United Nations Charter. The violent attacks that are sweeping across Northern Iraq cannot but awaken the consciences of all men and women of goodwill to concrete acts of solidarity by protecting those affected or threatened by violence and assuring the necessary and urgent assistance for the many displaced people as well as their safe return to their cities and their homes"
As per the Holy Father's 8/16/14 address to the Korean laity (Zenit translation):
- "Today, as ever, the Church needs credible lay witnesses to the saving truth of the Gospel, its power to purify and transform human hearts, and its fruitfulness for building up the human family in unity, justice and peace....all that you do is meant to advance the Church’s mission by ensuring that the temporal order is permeated and perfected by Christ’s Spirit and ordered to the coming of his Kingdom....At a time of great crisis for family life, which we all know, our Christian communities are called to support married couples and families in fulfilling their proper mission in the life of the Church and society. The family remains the basic unit of society and the first school in which children learn the human, spiritual and moral values which enable them to be a beacon of goodness, integrity and justice in our communities....May you draw constant inspiration and strength for your apostolates from the Eucharistic sacrifice, wherein 'that love of God and of humanity which is the soul of the apostolate is communicated and nourished' (Lumen Gentium, 33)."
