Does the Church support single parents?
Yes! A child is meant to be raised by his or her own, married father and mother. But there are times when, due to family tragedies or other unfortunate circumstances, this ideal cannot be realized. The Church acknowledges the difficulties faced by single parents and seeks to support them in their often heroic response to meet the needs of their children. Undesired single parenthood can still witness to the importance of sexual difference by acknowledging the challenges they face due to the lack of a father or mother.

Catechesis Corner
"Married love particularly reveals its true nature and nobility when we realize that it takes its origin from God, who 'is love,' the Father 'from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.'
"Marriage, then, is far from being the effect of chance or the result of the blind evolution of natural forces. It is in reality the wise and provident institution of God the Creator, whose purpose was to effect in man His loving design. As a consequence, husband and wife, through that mutual gift of themselves, which is specific and exclusive to them alone, develop that union of two persons in which they perfect one another, cooperating with God in the generation and rearing of new lives.
The marriage of those who have been baptized is, in addition, invested with the dignity of a sacramental sign of grace, for it represents the union of Christ and His Church."
--Pope Paul VI, Humanae Vitae, no. 8.

The MUR blog ran a series on Karol Wojtyla's (St. John Paul II) book Love and Responsibility. This book is still tremendously relevant to anyone who seeks to understand love (all of us!). St. John Paul II, "The Pope of the Family," teaches us what it means for man and woman to love one another in truth.

Also check out the Religious Liberty podcast! Current episodes feature the work of USCCB Government Relations, the wisdom of Archbishop Lori of Baltimore, Montse Alvarado from Becket, and more! Click here to listen to all the episodes!

United States Supreme Court On December 5, 2017, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral argument in the case Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The USCCB supported Jack Phillips in his religious freedom claim with an amicus brief. Jack Phillips, the owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop, declined to create a "wedding" cake for a same-sex couple in 2012. The two men, represented by the ACLU, filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, which ruled against Phillips. In May 2014, the Court of Appeals affirmed the Commission's decision, ordering Phillips and his employees to create cakes for such ceremonies and requiring him to "re-educate" his staff and file quarterly compliance reports. This case has important implications for religious freedom in general. Please pray for all involved in this case.
Pennsylvania An inmate of the Allegheny County prison is suing the county for alleged harassment due to being placed in the jail for male prisoners despite his "gender identity" as female.
