"No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God." (6/30/19)

  • "Three priests have filed suits against the Diocese of Corpus Christi and its bishop, claiming that they were wrongfully included in a list of clerics credibly accused of sexually abusing a minor within the diocese....On the list were 26 clerics, 12 of whom are deceased" (CNA, 6/22/19)
  • "McCarrick, who has always declared himself innocent, was deprived of any opportunity to appeal the sentence...the pope has made it impossible to conduct any further investigation, which could have revealed who in the Curia and elsewhere knew of McCarrick's abuses, when they knew it, and who helped him to be named archbishop of Washington and eventually a cardinal....The most important purpose of penalties in the canonical order is repentance and conversion....the mere 'reduction to the lay state' is completely inadequate, because it does not provide a remedy and does not express the concern for the most important purpose of punishment, namely, the salvation of McCarrick's soul. Indeed, unless it is accompanied by other measures, a simple laicization could be considered an expression of contempt for the lay state. The idea that a prelate who misbehaves is punished by being 'reduced' to the lay state smacks of clericalism. As Professor Scott Hahn argues, it undermines the meaning of the universal call to holiness" (Arcbishop Carlo Vigano, 5/2/19)
  • "On March 17, 2019, the Diocese of Trenton received an allegation of the sexual abuse of a minor against Rev. Msgr. Gregory D. Vaughan....The alleged abuse dates back to the late 1970s and early 1980s....This is the first and only allegation of sexual abuse of a minor against Msgr. Vaughan....the Diocese has determined that the allegation is credible. Msgr. Vaughan has denied the allegation. Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., removed Msgr. Vaughan from ministry, effective immediately" (Diocese of Trenton, 3/30/19)
  • "The present climate of suspicion surrounding Catholic priests amid the sexual abuse crisis has created a situation where accusations are accepted and acted upon without question and deemed almost normal where clerics are concerned. In some cases, the innocent are paying for the sins of the guilty" (Jeanne Smits, 3/6/19
  • In "announcing their compensation funds, the Pennsylvania bishops pointed to the New York compensations funds, noting that they’d paid out '$200 million in compensation to more than 1,000 survivors.' That’s an average of $200,000 per victim....The Archdiocese of Philadelphia compensation fund has announced that 'eligible claims will be paid within two weeks'" (The Daily Item, 12/6/18)
  • "Destroying the reputations of all clergy who've ever been accused of any misconduct, without first determining they're truly guilty, is not the answer" (Cathy Caridi, JCL, 9/27/18).
