As per a 4/16/14 alert from the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation, "
2014 is a critical election year in Pennsylvania. Our primary on May 20th and our general election on November 4th will set the stage for public policies for years to come. While the pro-life movement is a civil rights movement and boasts members of all different faiths, it is also a movement powered by prayer. Please pray that voters this year will elect candidates who will protect and defend innocent human life from conception to natural death." The Democratic Primary for Pa's 8th Congressional District will feature Kevin Strouse and Shaughnessy Naughton. The following information is taken from their campaign web sites:
"I believe women should have the right to make their
own decisions about their bodies, that our government should stay out of
our private lives and not interfere in a women’s conversation with her
doctor. I will protect a woman’s right to choose and stand up to those
in Congress who would seek to overturn this Constitutional,
legally-protected right. I also believe government should ensure
pregnant women and new families have access to the support they need to
make informed, healthy decisions, and make it easier for families to
adopt....
"I am opposed to discrimination in all forms – period.
I support marriage equality and was glad to see DOMA overturned by the
Supreme Court. Gay and lesbian couples should be able to take on the
responsibilities and obligations of making a lifetime commitment to each
other and their families."
"As a woman, a scientist, and an American, I was horrified to watch the
political battle raging in Washington, D.C. over basic health care and
the rights of women and families. It’s dumbfounding to watch Congress
continually try to turn back the clock on women’s rights – or say no to
commonsense economic policies like equal pay for equal work. Women are
heads of households, small business owners, wage earners, and Americans.
We not only need more people standing up for women’s rights in
Washington, D.C., we need more women in Congress. That’s why some of my
top priorities include:
•Keeping politicians out of women’s private healthcare decisions
•Ensuring access to quality, affordable health care, including reproductive health care
•Ending a culture of sexual assault in the military
•Finally providing equal pay for equal work....
"•We live in the greatest nation on earth, where
equal protection is not just an ideal, but a fundamental right under the
law. No one should suffer discrimination because of race, religion,
national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
Whether applying for a job, finding a home, eating in a restaurant,
serving in our military, or attending school, we must ensure that all
citizens are treated fairly and equally. That’s why my priorities
include:
•Ensuring that all members of our military and veterans – regardless of
their sexual orientation and gender identity – are allowed to serve
receive quality health care and services through the Department of
Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs
•Preventing bullying in our schools, from kindergarten through college
•Ending discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in the workplace
•Expanding benefits – including marriage - for same-sex couples"
Though they employ PC language, Kevin Strouse and Shaughnessy Naughton are taking positions, which are opposed to those promoted by our bishops.
Mike Fitzpatrick
- Republican Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick certainly deserves kudos for his votes on HR 7, HR 1797, and HR 301, as well as his co-sponsorship of HR 732, HR 940, and HR 3979.
- If Mike wants the support of pro life/pro family people in November, we need him to come out in defense of marriage/family. He needs to stand tall and unapologetically co-sponsor/support HR 3279, HJRes51, HR3133, HR3829, and HR 1091.
- Mike needs to clearly oppose HR1755, HR2278, and Planned Parenthood.
