As per Human Life Action (a partner agency of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops),
- " The National Institutes of Health, (NIH), has recently announced its intention to lift its moratorium on funding research that involves injecting human embryonic stem cells into animal embryos thus creating part-human and part-animal organisms known as chimeras. This means that, for the first time, the Federal government will begin spending taxpayer dollars on the creation and manipulation of new beings whose very existence blurs the line between humans and non-human animals. Public comments in opposition to this unethical research are currently being accepted. However, the window to act is tight; comments close on September 6 at midnight. Comments may be submitted electronically or by mail. A suggested message and instructions on how to submit comments, as well as further information about the ethical issues involved in the research may be found in the Human Life Action Center here."
"This Labor Day, we draw our attention to our sisters and brothers who face twin crises—deep trials in both the world of work and the state of the family....Saint John Paul II reminded us that human labor is an essential key to understanding our social relationships, vital to family formation and the building up of community according to our God-given dignity....In our call to rebuild community on a firmer foundation, we must rely upon the sister principles of solidarity and subsidiarity" (USCCB, 9/5/16).
On a federal level, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is urging "YES" to the Conscience Protection Act of 2016 (S304), the Child Welfare Provider Inclusion Act (HR1299/S667), the First Amendment Defense Act (HR2802/S1598), the Russell Amendment, the Sentencing Reform Act (HR3713), the Corrections and Recidivism Reduction Act (HR759), Second Chance Reauthorization Act (HR3406), and “increasing refugee resettlement here...and ensuring adequate funding for refugee assistance overseas and U.S. resettlement", while urging "NO" to "the Separation Wall in the Cremisan Valley."
